Artwork is among the most delicate and valuable category of items people move, and improper packing can lead to irreversible damage. Whether you own original oil paintings, framed photographs, limited-edition prints, or sculptural pieces, each type of artwork requires specific handling techniques. The first step is to assess your collection and determine which pieces need professional crating versus which can be safely packed with standard materials. High-value or irreplaceable works should always be professionally crated by your moving company or a specialty art handler.
For framed paintings and prints, start by placing painter's tape in an X pattern across the glass to prevent shattering during transit and to hold shards in place if breakage does occur. Wrap the entire piece in acid-free glassine paper to protect the surface from moisture and scratches. Follow with a generous layer of bubble wrap, securing it with tape on the back only — never apply tape directly to the frame's surface or any exposed artwork. For additional protection, sandwich the wrapped piece between two pieces of rigid cardboard cut slightly larger than the frame and tape the cardboard edges together firmly.
Specialty picture boxes, also known as mirror boxes or telescoping boxes, are essential for transporting framed artwork safely. These adjustable boxes accommodate various frame sizes and provide rigid protection on all sides. Place the wrapped artwork inside the box and fill any remaining space with crumpled packing paper to eliminate movement. Always store and transport artwork vertically, never flat. Flat stacking puts pressure on the center of the piece and increases the risk of warping, cracking, or puncturing. Mark the box clearly with arrows indicating which side faces up and label it as fragile.
Sculptures and three-dimensional artwork present unique challenges. Wrap protruding elements individually with bubble wrap and secure with tape before wrapping the entire piece. For delicate sculptures, consider creating a custom nest inside a box using layers of foam or crumpled paper that conforms to the shape of the piece. Canvas paintings that are not framed should never be wrapped directly in bubble wrap, as the texture can imprint on the paint surface. Instead, use glassine paper or a clean cotton sheet as the first protective layer before adding bubble wrap.
