How to Pack a TV for Moving

Modern flat-screen televisions are simultaneously expensive and fragile, making them one of the most important items to pack correctly for a move. A 65-inch OLED or QLED screen can cost several thousand dollars and is easily damaged by pressure, impact, or temperature extremes during transport. The screen itself is the most vulnerable component — even a small amount of flexing or a bump in the wrong spot can crack the panel from the inside, creating damage that is invisible from the front until you power it on at your new home. Taking the time to pack your TV properly is always worth the effort compared to the cost and hassle of replacing a broken screen.

The gold standard for packing a television is its original manufacturer box and foam inserts. If you kept the original packaging, simply reverse the unboxing process: wrap the screen in the included protective sleeve or a soft microfiber cloth, insert the foam corner pieces, slide the TV into the box, and seal it securely. If you no longer have the original box, you have several options. Many moving companies, including Boston Best Rate Movers, carry specialty TV boxes that adjust to fit various screen sizes. You can also purchase TV-specific boxes from home improvement stores or U-Haul locations. As a last resort, you can build a custom protective shell using two large pieces of cardboard taped together around the TV with generous bubble wrap padding.

Before packing, disconnect all cables and accessories from the TV. Remove the stand or wall mount bracket, bag up the screws and hardware in a labeled ziplock bag, and tape it to the back of the TV or place it inside the box. Take a quick photo of the cable connections on the back panel so you can replicate the setup at your new home without guessing. Wrap the power cord loosely and secure it with a twist tie. If your TV has a swivel mount or articulating arm, remove the TV from the mount first and pack them as separate pieces.

When wrapping the TV, start by placing a soft microfiber blanket or clean cotton sheet directly against the screen to prevent scratches. Then wrap the entire unit in two to three layers of bubble wrap, securing each layer with tape — but never apply tape directly to the TV's surface or bezels. For additional protection, sandwich the wrapped TV between two layers of rigid cardboard and secure everything with stretch wrap. The goal is to create a rigid package that cushions the screen from all sides and prevents any flexing during transport. Mark the package FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP with arrows pointing to the screen face.

During transport, a packed TV should always ride upright in the moving truck, positioned vertically between mattresses, couches, or other soft items that prevent it from tipping or shifting. Never lay a flat-screen TV face down or on its back for extended transport, as vibrations from the road can cause the screen to bow and crack under its own weight. Secure the TV with straps against the truck wall if possible. At your new address, let the TV acclimate to room temperature for at least an hour before powering it on, especially if you moved during a cold Boston winter when the TV may have been exposed to freezing temperatures in the truck. This prevents condensation inside the panel that could cause electrical damage on startup.
