Tips for Moving Heavy Appliances Safely

Heavy appliances are among the most dangerous items to move without proper technique and equipment. A standard refrigerator weighs between two hundred and four hundred pounds, a washer-dryer set can exceed three hundred pounds combined, and even a dishwasher typically weighs seventy to ninety pounds. These items are not only heavy but also awkward in shape, with smooth surfaces that are difficult to grip and internal components that can be damaged by tilting or rough handling. Moving them safely requires preparation, the right tools, and ideally the strength and experience of professional movers.

Preparation begins twenty-four to forty-eight hours before the move. Refrigerators and freezers must be defrosted and cleaned before transport. Unplug the unit, remove all food, and leave the doors open to allow ice to melt and the interior to dry completely. A wet refrigerator can develop mold during transit, and melting ice creates a slipping hazard. Tape the doors shut with moving tape or secure them with bungee cords so they do not swing open during the move. For washers, run an empty cycle to drain residual water, then disconnect the hoses and stuff towels inside the drum to prevent the agitator from moving. Use the shipping bolts that came with the washer to lock the drum in place — if you no longer have them, replacement bolts are available at appliance parts stores.

Moving heavy appliances requires an appliance dolly, which differs from a standard hand truck in that it has a wider platform, taller back, and straps designed to secure heavy, smooth-surfaced items. Standard hand trucks are inadequate for appliances weighing over one hundred fifty pounds. Slide the dolly under the appliance, strap it securely, tilt the load back, and roll it carefully. Never push a heavy appliance across the floor without a dolly — it can scratch hardwood, tear vinyl, and crack tile. Place protective sheets of cardboard or hardboard on the floor along the entire path from the appliance to the truck.

Navigating stairs with heavy appliances is the highest-risk part of the process. Going down stairs, the weight wants to accelerate, and one slip can cause the item to tumble with enough force to cause serious injury and total destruction. Going up stairs, the physical strain on the person below the appliance is immense. A stair-climbing dolly with rotating treads makes this dramatically safer and easier, but these specialized tools are expensive to purchase and are standard equipment only in professional moving fleets. Two experienced movers working in coordination can move most appliances up or down stairs safely, but adding a third person as a spotter is a smart precaution.
