Packing Techniques: Boston Movers

Professional movers develop packing techniques through years of hands-on experience that no amount of online research can fully replicate. The methods used by experienced Boston moving crews have been refined through thousands of moves across every type of building, neighborhood, and challenge the city presents. These techniques prioritize protection, efficiency, and organization — the three pillars that determine whether your belongings arrive at your new home in the same condition they left the old one. Understanding how professionals pack can improve your own packing efforts and help you appreciate the value professional packing services deliver.

The foundation of professional packing is the box itself. Experienced packers select the right size box for each type of item — small boxes for heavy items like books, medium boxes for kitchenware and small appliances, and large boxes for lightweight bulky items like bedding and pillows. Overloading a large box with heavy items is the most common amateur packing mistake and leads to crushed contents, broken boxes, and back injuries during lifting. Every box should be liftable by one person without strain. The bottom of each box gets reinforced with an extra strip of tape across the center seam, and the top is sealed the same way. Professional packers never use the interlocking flap method for closing boxes — it is not secure enough for the stresses of loading, stacking, and transport.

Wrapping technique makes all the difference for fragile items. Professional packers use a clean, flat surface — typically a dining table covered with packing paper — as their wrapping station. Each fragile item gets wrapped individually in two to three sheets of clean packing paper before any bubble wrap is applied. The paper goes on first because bubble wrap's textured surface can leave impressions on delicate finishes and painted surfaces. Plates are wrapped and packed vertically on edge, not stacked flat, because vertical positioning distributes impact forces more evenly. Glasses are stuffed with crumpled paper inside the bowl before wrapping to create internal support that prevents crushing.

The packing order within each box follows a specific logic. Heavy items go on the bottom, lighter items on top. A layer of crumpled packing paper lines the bottom of the box as a cushion before any items are placed. After each layer of items, more crumpled paper fills the gaps and creates separation. The top layer gets a generous padding of paper before the box is sealed. When the packed box is gently shaken, nothing should shift or rattle inside. If you hear movement, the box needs more fill material. This attention to eliminating internal movement is what separates professional packing from amateur efforts and is the single biggest factor in preventing breakage during transit.
