Moving Boston Rainy Season

Boston's rainy season is not a single defined period but rather a persistent reality that spans much of the year. April and May bring spring showers, late-summer tropical moisture can drop heavy rain in August and September, and nor'easters deliver soaking precipitation from October through March. On any given moving day, there is a real chance of rain, drizzle, or an unexpected downpour that threatens to soak your furniture, warp your cardboard boxes, and turn a smooth operation into a muddy, stressful mess. The key to a successful rainy-day move is accepting that you cannot control the weather and focusing your energy on the preparations that keep your belongings dry, your crew efficient, and your timeline intact regardless of what the sky decides to do.

Waterproofing your belongings starts during the packing phase, well before moving day. Use plastic bin liners or heavy-duty garbage bags as an inner layer inside every cardboard box. Simply open the bag inside the box, pack your items into it, twist the top closed, and then seal the box normally. If the exterior cardboard gets wet during loading, the plastic liner keeps the contents dry. For furniture, invest in plastic furniture covers or large plastic sheeting that can be draped over sofas, mattresses, dressers, and tables during the walk between the building and the truck. Mattress bags with zipper closures are inexpensive and essential — a rain-soaked mattress can develop mold within 24 to 48 hours if it does not dry completely, turning a $1,000 investment into a health hazard.

On moving day, create a dry staging area inside both the origin and destination homes. Choose a room close to the main entrance where movers can set down items, adjust their grip, and add or remove weather protection without exposing belongings to rain for extended periods. Lay down drop cloths, old towels, or plastic tarps on the floor of the staging area and along the path between the entrance and the truck to absorb water tracked in by boots and dollies. If your building has a covered porch, awning, or loading dock, use it as a buffer zone where the crew can transfer items from the staging area to the truck without direct rain exposure. Every second a box or piece of furniture spends in the rain is a risk — minimizing that exposure is the core strategy.

Communication with your moving crew is critical during wet weather. Discuss the rain plan before they start loading. Ask whether their trucks have weather-tight cargo areas with sealed doors and intact roof seals — a leaky truck negates all of your waterproofing efforts. Clarify whether the crew will use moving blankets under plastic wrap for upholstered furniture, and whether they carry tarps or rain covers as standard equipment. Reputable companies like Boston Best Rate Movers equip every truck with weather-protection gear and train crews in wet-weather loading techniques, but not all movers maintain the same standards. If your mover does not have rain-day protocols, provide your own tarps and plastic sheeting and oversee the process yourself.

After the move, address any moisture promptly to prevent long-term damage. Open all boxes as soon as possible and allow damp cardboard to air out or discard it immediately. Wipe down any furniture that got wet with dry towels and run dehumidifiers or fans to circulate air in the new space. Check upholstered items for dampness by pressing a dry paper towel into the fabric — if it picks up moisture, the piece needs active drying before covers or cushions are replaced. Inspect electronics for condensation inside screens or ports and allow them to reach room temperature before plugging in. A few hours of post-move vigilance protects your belongings from the mold, mildew, and water damage that can result from even a brief rain encounter during transit.
