Expert Packing Tips to Protect Your Belongings

Packing is often the most time-consuming part of any move, but a systematic approach makes it manageable. Start with rooms you use least — guest bedrooms, storage areas, and the garage — and work toward the kitchen and bathrooms last. This way your daily routine stays intact as long as possible. Invest in quality supplies: sturdy double-walled boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, and painter's tape.

For the kitchen, wrap plates vertically in packing paper (they are less likely to break this way) and use cell boxes for glasses and stemware. Wrap pots and pans in moving blankets or bubble wrap. For bedrooms, use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes and vacuum-seal bags for bulky linens and comforters to save space in the truck. Label every box with its contents and destination room using a color-coded system.

Do not forget to photograph the back of your electronics before disconnecting cables — it makes reassembly a breeze. Place screws and small hardware in labeled ziplock bags taped to the corresponding furniture piece. For artwork and mirrors, wrap them in glassine paper first, then bubble wrap, and place them in specialty picture boxes or between two pieces of cardboard taped together.

Always pack a "first night" box with sheets, towels, toilet paper, basic tools, snacks, and water bottles so you can settle into your new home without rummaging through dozens of boxes. Mark this box clearly and load it last so it comes off the truck first.
