Boston Moving Permit: Apply Online

The City of Boston has made it easier than ever to apply for a moving permit online. Gone are the days of standing in line at City Hall or making phone calls during business hours — the entire process can now be completed from your computer or smartphone in under fifteen minutes. The online system is available twenty-four hours a day, accepts credit card payments, and provides instant confirmation once your application is submitted. Whether you are moving across town or into Boston from another city, this guide walks you through the online application process so you can secure your moving day parking without any hassle.

Start by navigating to the City of Boston's official permitting website. You will need to create an account with a valid email address and password. Once logged in, look for the section labeled Temporary Permits or Moving Permits. Select the Temporary No-Parking Permit option to begin your application. The form will ask for the street address where you need the reserved space, the date of your move, and the time window during which the space should be reserved. Be generous with your time estimate — if you think the move will take four hours, request a six-hour window to account for delays. You will also need to specify the length of curb space required, measured in feet. A typical moving truck needs thirty to forty-five feet of clear curb.

After entering the location and timing details, you will be prompted to pay the permit fee. The current rate is twenty-five dollars per day per address. Payment is accepted by credit or debit card directly through the online portal. Once payment is processed, you will receive an email confirmation with your permit number and printable no-parking signs. These signs must be posted at your reserved location at least twenty-four hours before the move. Print multiple copies — one for each end of your reserved zone and a few extras in case any get removed overnight. Each sign should display the date, time window, and permit number clearly so that residents and parking enforcement officers can verify their legitimacy.

The online system also allows you to modify or cancel a permit if your plans change. If your move date shifts, log back into your account and submit a change request. Cancellations may be eligible for a refund depending on how far in advance you cancel. Keep in mind that the system requires at least two business days of lead time for new applications and modifications, so do not wait until the day before your move to make changes. If you encounter any issues with the online portal — such as your address not being recognized in the system or a payment error — the Boston Transportation Department can assist by phone during regular business hours.

Boston Best Rate Movers recommends applying for your permit as soon as your move date is confirmed, ideally one to two weeks in advance. During peak moving periods like the September first turnover and end-of-month dates, the permitting office processes a high volume of applications, and while the online system is generally fast, giving yourself extra lead time provides a cushion against any unexpected delays. If you are moving from one Boston address to another, remember to apply for two separate permits — one for your current home and one for your new address. Having both permits in hand before moving day ensures a smooth experience from the moment the truck pulls up at your old place to the final box carried into your new home.
